Two offspring can be produced by the same pregnancy which can either be monozygotic or dizygotic. Monozygotic; which are identical can be referred to twins formed or developed from one zygote (yoke), and contains all genetic information necessary to form two embryos. The dizygotic (fraternal) can be developed from two different eggs, where each of these eggs are fertilized by separate sperm cells.
According to a statistic on Wikipedia, The twin birth rate in the United States rose 76% from 1980 through 2009, from 18.9 to 33.3 per 1,000 births. The Yorubas have the highest rate of twinning in the world, at 45–50 twin sets (or 90–100 twins) per 1,000 live births; possibly because of high consumption of a specific type of yam containing a natural phytoestrogen which may stimulate the ovaries to release an egg from each side.
The chances you have to conceive twins under a normal circumstance are slim; especially when you or your spouse does not have any history of such in the family. Taking medications as regard fertility could however increase your chances of having twins, but there are other natural and proven ways towards having twins too.
Natural facts on your chances of having twins
Twins can be hereditary
Your chances of having twins is high if you are a twin. Having a family history of twins can also increase your chances of having twins. If for instance, you have someone who once had twins in your mother or father’s side, and where such twins are fraternal.
Age as a factor of having twins
I am an advocate of early marriage, and I stand with the advantages it entails. Those advantages are worth more than so many other things, but increasing your chances of having twins is definitely not one of them. Even though there is a low fertility rate in older women, they are likely to have twins when they conceive. Older women produce more FSH than their younger counterparts. In preparation for ovulation in each month, the FHS (follicle-stimulating hormone) causes an egg to mature, and women with higher FHS are likely to release more eggs in a single cycle. What this means is that they (older women) are less likely to get pregnant but if they do, it may be two.
The number of pregnancies
Your chances of having twins increases depending on the number of pregnancies you’ve had. In other words, the more you conceive, the higher your chances of having twins.
Research has it, that tall women and large women have a high chance of giving birth to twins than women with small body type. Likewise, overweight women also have a high chance of having twins.
Other natural ways of increasing your chances of having twins
Taking fertility medications
We have the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) which is a process of combining an egg and sperm in a lab dish, then have the embryo transferred to the uterus. If you are under IVF; depending on the number of eggs you placed in the embryo, there is about 40% chance of you giving birth to twins. However, care must be taken as the use of IVF has some side effects that are not too pleasant.
Taking advantage of a stopped birth-control pill
You receive excess hormone stimulation if you try to get pregnant after you have stopped taking any birth control pill for few months. During this period, your body needs like two cycles to get back to shape. And receiving excess hormone stimulation causes the release of more than one egg, thereby increases your chances of having more than one baby.
Having said all these things, it is important to stress the fact that having twins is all about your love for them. Though, some argued that only those who detest having twins and scared to raise them are the ones blessed with double babies. Funny enough, I don’t have a source to prove the point so I might as well want to disregard it.
